I can tell you from experience, if you don't get the tank fully drained, and let the TT set out in the summer heat for a a few days, you will be spending some time trying to get the smell out of the system. ;)
I drain the black tank, and then fill it up about a third of the way, and then drain it again. That helps get rid of some of the residuals.
