I'll just say I had a dually with the 8.1. It's a great engine: smooth, quiet, powerful, reliable. My work truck dually got about 10 mpg no matter what: towing, highway, around town, always about 10 mpg.
When I hooked up 14,000 pounds behind that truck is was almost like driving my '05 Duramax, almost.
The 6.0 is a good engine too, I had one in an '02 2500HD truck. It got better mileage and pulled my 5,000 pound trailer fine but he big block is a whole different animal when it comes to towing.
