Had an '01 Burb 2500 8.1L, 4.10 4WD. Towed a 7500lb TT on a 8000 mile trip....overall hand calculated MPG: 8.89 @ 62-65MPH. Temp guages NEVER budged. To be honest, never drove it much around town, but if driven responsibly, I could do pretty good with it. Exert your displacement, and she will merrily suck back the fuel.
Tried a 6L Yukon, and it just didn't feel as responsive. Towing MPG would be about the same I"m guessing because the 8.1L is barely breathing when cruising on Interstates. 6L would have to work a bit harder.
Also had an '01 F350 CC V10 3.73. 3 year average towing MPG: 8.15. HWY 16 @ 70MPH. In town 11.
Kick myself all the time for giving up the Burb. Effortless towing. Sounded better when climbing at 3-3700RPM ....my opinion.
The F350 towed pretty well, but was hampered by it's 3.73 ratio.....4.30 would be perfect for that engine.
Would recommend the 8.1L if you can find one....you won't be disappointed. V10 is no slouch, but I preferred the bigblock.
Cheers,
Mike
