We just towed from Springfield, MO to Little Rock, AR and were down to 30 mph on some hills because the little engine just didn't have enough power to keep up with the traffic without dropping off to second gear and rev over 3000 mph which we didn't want to do.
It remains to be seen how long the engine/transmission lasts doing this kind of towing.
Love the Suburbans. Regarding the 6.0, you can get the 13-14 mpgs you mentioned, on the highway, unloaded, with a 4.10 gear. It is possible. All three engines are great towing motors and can easily go 200K.
I'm not sure what problems Dick is having with his 6.0. I pulled a 7k trailer from Springfield, Mo to Ark several years ago, with a 5.3 Tahoe and it was effortless. 3k in 2nd gear is what? 25 mph? I would suggest a thorough examination of your TV from a qualified mechanic.
