Hi Ben,
The GMT400 is not outside the real of possibility for my next tow vehicle. It has to be a 454 though. The 5.7 will not do what I will need it to do.
12 MPG highway would be pretty amazing as I was use to getting 9-9.5 with my dually... I have acquainted myself with the GMT400 and am aware of the issues with them.
The 6.5 Diesel would be an option but I have some reservations.. Mostly the broke cranks and cracked heads... and cracked main webbing...
I know the 6.5 issues have been resolved with the Peninsular 6.5 Diesel and make a nice towing beast. But I do not want to drop 5-10k to make a towing beast out of a 6.5.
That brings me back to the original options... High mileage 8.1's and 6.0's can be found for around 5-7k... the GMT400's with 454's can be had for around 3-5k in decent shape. I do my own maintenance and repairs so I am not worried about some minor issues. Either platform in this price range will require some work.. there is no doubt about that.
Funny, my local craigslist had a 8.1 suburban pop up yesterday with just 100k on it for 10k... Too bad thats way outside of my budget. Here is the link if someone wants to snatch it up, its a heck of a deal. *Not my truck.. btw..* 2001 8.1 Sub with about 100k miles
So, the search continues for my future Disney Family hauler :) (we love us some Ft Wilderness btw)
Thanks!
Jeremiah
