I towed my TT in sig for 2 years with a 00 Excursion V10 with 4.30 gears. I had it gone through with all fresh fluids, replaced every faulty component and went from IL to FL back to IL with no issues. Empty I could barely touch 16 mpg empty at 62 mph (IIRC) on flat highway. When towing the 4.30's kept it in its torque peak at around 67 mph so towing was better with less downshifting the faster you went. I could get from 6 mpg (hills) to 9 mpg (flats) towing 8800 and hauling a family of 5. I also briefly towed with a E350 V10 passenger van but it must had a lower (numerical) rear gear because the engine lugged at highway speed and required downshifting to pass.
I have owned 2 GMT400's a 98 and 00 Suburban 2500 7.4L and a C3500 CC DRW and they towed almost as well but with less fuel economy but I never got to hand calculate their mileage so I could be wrong. They were mainly for local towing so I can't directly compare them but it did seem they had more low end torque.
