As far as quality as a tow vehicle, I have never had a truck that pulled my bumper-tow trailer as well as that Avalanche.
You might be aware that the Avalanche is really a rebodied Suburban..
If you think an 8.1 Suburban is hard to find try looking for an 8.1 Avalanche....a true collector's item!
I never really thought of it as a collectors item - but now that you mention it, I have not seen a lot of them.
When I got it, I thought - "If Mad Max were to build a bad-ass pickup truck to haul the family, it would look and act like this truck"... Hence, I named that truck "Max".
I kicked myself in the butt probably a hundred times after I bought him. Before he was broken in, he would give 6-7 MPG City and (maybe) 10 MPG highway if I kept him at 65 or below.. It took a couple of thousand-mile tows to get his rings finally seated. Oil use went down and power just kept getting better.. I traded him off on the Super Duty because I was going to pull a 5th wheel and that is just not in the cards for an Avalanche.
As it is now, I am trading off the Super Duty V10 on a 2015 Super Duty diesel..
The V10 is smooth as glass and strong for what it is - don't get me wrong, but 413 cubic inches up against 496 cubic inches, proves the old addage - Theirs no replacement for cubic displacement..".....
