We rented a trailer for a 10 day trip around the Ozarks and decided we liked it, so we bought a similar TT.
Our needs were specific, a bed you could exit without crawling over your spouse, large enough for two adults and a big dog if it rained all day, small enough to drive around towns to find quilt shops and a big bathroom with linen space. We settled for a three year old 25 ft. Dutchmen TT with a small slide. We pull it with an E-boost F-150.
Our first trip was from IN to the FL Everglades, our next trip was from IN to Glacier National Park in MT, our third major trip was from IN to AZ. All of these adventure were between 4 and 8 weeks long. In addition we have had several week long adventures. We closed out our third season having accumulated 30,000 towing miles with countless sight seeing miles add to that.
So in answer to your question, yes you can jump right in and go where you want and you may find that you become more adventuresome over time.
However, before you spend the big bucks, rent a unit similar to what you think you want; it will tell you if you really like pulling one of these barns down the road. :)
Good luck
