Sunset trail or kodiak?

Hi all, been looking at new tt's and have found 2 we really like, a sunset trail reserve 26rb and a kodiak 279rbsl. Looking for opinions on the respective manufacturers to help in our decision.
  • No problem. In my experience with Kodiak so far, if it doesn't look right, it's not.
  • De-lamination is my biggest fear, I have a local dealer with a 2014 kodiak close-out that just doesn't look right under the slide..as if it's bowing. We were sold on the sunset until my wife spotted the kodiak at another dealer so I needed to check into it. Thanks for the info.

Can you elaborate on what the problems are please?

We've had the front and rear cap replaced because of delamination. There is delamination above the slide. The rear support bracket of the slide was only tacked instead of welded. Thankfully that broke at the storage yard we keep it at instead of the very secluded camping spot we had just left. The right side of the battery tray was also only tacked. We found that issue after pulling into our spot and noticing that the battery was about to drop free. Those are the major issues.

The fit and finish of the interior is also pretty bad. I had to caulk the shower enclosure because it hadn't been done at the factory. The majority of the trim was off center and in some places not there at all. All the plumbing fixtures in the bathroom came from the factory plugged up with plastic filings that needed to be flushed out. We've had to replace three pancake lights because the connections with the light bulb bases were so loose only one bulb would work. We're on our second radio now. The first would turn itself on and off and cycle through all the modes on its own. I know I'm forgetting a couple more minor things.

Everything has been fixed under warranty with no problems so far. Well except the fact that we've made 4 payments on it while it's been sitting in the shop...
  • I have a 2014 Kodiak 284BHSL that has spent 15 of the 46 weeks we've owned it in the shop for repairs. It is, thus far, the worst single purchase I've ever made.
  • We had a Kodiak 23TT for five years that we were pretty happy with (other than being a hybrid) and now have had a Sunset Trail 29SS for two years. I don't think you can go wrong with either one.
  • I have the Kobiak 279rbsl. My DW and I love it as the floor plan is perfect for us. I have had to replace the A/C within thirteen months but that is the only issue we have had. It trailers very nicely behind my Ford F-150 and is easy to get into campsites. Not sure how many camp with you, but I would recommend the Queen size sofa sleeper over the jackknife couch. The sofa sleeper is very comfortable as we have had our grown son and his wife sleep on it as well as friend's of our. All have said the sleeper was very comfortable. Good luck with whatever you get and many happy memories.
