It's not surprising, it's normal if one understands gearing.
In worked in transmission engineering in the 1980s (not gearing). I know enough to know that the customers
perception of a "quality" shift has a lot to do with ratio step size.

Second gear starts seem very logical, but, from a stand still, how does the transmission computer know whether to start in first or second or possibly even third ?
Under heavy loads, I'll bet it never shifts to 8, 9 or 10 ! I can't wait to see a tow up to Eisenhower Tunnel !
