One also has to look at this from a tire diam too. As a rig with 28" tires and 3.42 gears, 30" tires and 3.73 gears, and 32" with 4.10s have the same shift points, gradability, speeds etc assuming everything else is equal. 
That 4.30 gearing could make it so one can use TOD at 55-60 mph. Reality, if it can be locked out, for those that drive 70, tow at 60-65, a 3.42 or 3.73 axel ratio would be the best option for today 32-34" tire diam rigs that pull at the heaviest weights pickups tow at, and are used as commuter rigs, ie 10-12K lbs of trailer. If towing above this amount, then the 3.73 minimum, 4.10 or lower RA is a better option.
