Unless you are driving a lot in reverse (not common)...I would much rather have a deep granny gear in reverse. 
When I'm backing into a parking spot (non-towing), I'm usually riding the brake to keep the speed down anyway. But backing a trailer, I would rather let the gearing do the work without having to hit the accelerator (or at least just feather the accelerator a bit rather than having to punch it to get any movement).
I agree with you that for most anyone a granny reverse is not a bad thing for a hd truck, however I put myself in situations where I have a trailer in tow and want to back up, sometimes a half mile or more, it's nice to be able to get moving 25 or 30 mph or so in those situations.
