They are probably all excellent but my personal preference is that they would have left reverse as a higher speed. I think it was 1:-3.4 in the 6 speed
Unless you are driving a lot in reverse (not common)...I would much rather have a deep granny gear in reverse.
When I'm backing into a parking spot (non-towing), I'm usually riding the brake to keep the speed down anyway. But backing a trailer, I would rather let the gearing do the work without having to hit the accelerator (or at least just feather the accelerator a bit rather than having to punch it to get any movement).
I agree with you that for most anyone a granny reverse is not a bad thing for a hd truck, however I put myself in situations where I have a trailer in tow and want to back up, sometimes a half mile or more, it's nice to be able to get moving 25 or 30 mph or so in those situations.
Maybe I am missing something, but backing a trailer at 25-30 mph for a half mile, would not be your average driver.
I wish my 13 Ford 6-speed had a lower reverse. It should at least be as low as first, and lower yet, like the new 10-speed, would be perfect for me. It is my only complaint, with an otherwise great drive train. At home I usually go into 4-low, after getting rig straight, when backing into my drive way, as it is uphill, and little room to maneuver.
