Up until 2007 I never even thought about using one...then we hot the road FT
Thought it would be a worthwhile 'tool' because we would be going to new/unknown areas and who knows what we might encounter 120V AC power wise.
Bought a portable Progressive Industries 50A surge/voltage protector
IT alerted us to couple of reverse polarity issues, lost neutral, lack of grounding and tripped power to rig on numerous low voltage situations.
YES....we have one and use it
IF you are going to buy one....get one that not only protects from surges but also checks line voltage, checks ground/neutral, mis-wiring at power pedestal etc.
Those will cost you more than $100........more like $400
