The other thing with these higher numbers of gears is that the OEMs now tune
the ICE's (both gasser and diesel) for max efficiency and SMOG cleanness in
so these automatics will try to keep within those optimal RPM range
Couldn't do that as easily before with the long legged gearing. Close ratio now
allows them to keep the ICE within a much narrower RPM range...and...tune for that
