- BedlamModeratorI believe that some of the single rear axle Class A's are over 20K lbs on the rear when loaded up. Even a Class 5 chassis cab can have 16.5k lb rated Dana 130 axle, so don't think that the bigger RV's cannot be over weight.
I have not seen a RV pulled over for weight, but have seen one pulled over because the driver could not stay in his lane and many pulled over for speeding.
My F250 had a GVWR of 9800 lbs and I was typically at 11,500 lbs when carrying my truck camper and closer to 12,500 lbs when I had my enclosed trailer also in tow at the same time. I traveled twice to BC with this setup and was not pulled over by law enforcement. My truck rode evenly on upgraded suspension and 19.5" wheels and was under axle capacity, but I was over my GVWR sticker. For my own reference, I made a supplemental tag with inflation pressures and weight ratings for my upgraded tires and rims which I applied next to the OEM tire ratings - This was not official and did not cover up any of the original ratings, but it did show a more accurate configuration than what came with my truck. - transamz9Explorer

Ancient history but - Eons ago dad (RIP) was pulled over in NY state in his pickup truck (IIRR he had commercial plates on it.) He had a track trencher in the bed and it did squat a bit.
Weight was OK on his axles and tires but he was over on his registration weight. Seems I remember the fine was $1000 or so.
He drove 10-wheelers and equipment trailers for years and this was his only overweight ticket.
So yes they will pull a pickup over.
Your dad (RIP) was hauling commercially. Whole different set of rules. GVWR of truck is 10,001 or combined GVWR of truck and trailer combined is 10,001 and over is considered a commercial vehicle if you are in commerce (making profit from it). At this time the operator has to have a medical card on file. - mrkojeExplorerTwo things to consider I suppose. First being overweight for the road and secondly being overweight based on the TV GVWR and the trailer GTWR. I think it would be extremely unlikely that any RVer would find themselves in a position that they would be close to the highway max with the exception of tour bus or semi trailer type RVs which are rare. I am not aware of any laws or ordinances for being within specs considering the TV or trailer weight ratings. IF a law enforcement officer was to suspect that your tow vehicle trailer setup was unsafe somehow (i.e. minivan towing 27ft trailer with a 14ft boat behind that) and you were swaying all over the road) then I believe it would be within their power to pull you over and possibly cite you for negligence or a similar ordinance for endangering public safety. Also if you were being negligent regarding your tow vehicle trailer weights that you would also open yourself up to civil liability should some sort of accident happen.
- Chuck_thehammerExploreroh, never..
I used to tow a pop-up with a motorcycle... like 600 pounds behind bike.. with electric brakes...
over 80,000 miles traveled all over the USA.. never stopped once. in 17 years. - campingkenExplorerIn CA if you are involved in a multi fatal accident on the freeway the CHP MAIT (major accident investigation team) may be called to investigate. They will put all the pieces on a scale and if they determine that being over weight effected your ability to stop (and this is a cause of the accident) you could be cited. If you are grossly overweight manslaughter (causing a death due to negligence) could also come into play (especially if you wiped out several children on a school bus and it became a major story (political.)
This being said I am not aware of any actual criminal cases being filed due to an overweight RV. - full_moseyExplorerExcluding the OP's post and mine, I count 28 replies. The count of citations is 0 for 28.

An F-150 pulling a 30 plus foot fiver WILL draw unwanted attention here from the RCMP. Ditto for an 8' overhead TC on a 1500 with a 6-1/2 foot box. If the weights exceed the numbers on the door sticker, the unit will get parked. We got stopped in a blitz, they checked our registration and waved us through but one unit was being weighed.
B.C., the only jurisdiction that puts credance on small vehicle GVW. The most amazing part is how they verify being overweight, it is 'in the opinion of the officer'. No requirement to weigh.
As I recall those regulations, which I read a while ago, the regualations apply only to the tow vechicle for tow vehciles under 4500 kg (trailer weight only ocunts for the hitch weight, this is not combined weight). Overweight results in a fine, no handcuffs. - mboppExplorerAncient history but - Eons ago dad (RIP) was pulled over in NY state in his pickup truck (IIRR he had commercial plates on it.) So yes they will pull a pickup over. - mowermechExplorerWhen I first registered my old '94 Dodge Ram 3500 CTD in Montana, the clerk asked what GVW (Note: NOT GCW) I wanted. I thought for a minute, and said "How about 14,000 lbs?", thinking there was no way I could ever load that much on the old beast. No problem. I forget what it cost, but it certainly wasn't much.
I drug a fifth wheel around the West for a little over two years with that truck, at an approximate GCW of a little over 21,000 lbs. Never got weighed, until I weighed myself at a Flying J in Idaho during the last trip home. I admit, the ongoing weight posts on these forums made me curious.
IIRC, the weight was 21,180 lbs. - romoreExplorer IIAn F-150 pulling a 30 plus foot fiver WILL draw unwanted attention here from the RCMP. Ditto for an 8' overhead TC on a 1500 with a 6-1/2 foot box.
