Suspenson

Thinking about doing a small up grade to the suspension on my 26TH toy hauler. I am trying to decide between the MORryde UO12-016 Heavy Duty Shackle Upgrade Kit or the DEXTER AXLE (K71-359-00 Heavy Duty Suspension Kit.

The only difference is that the Dexter kit includes new equalizers also. Price difference is about $50.00, so that is not really an issue. Both kits come with new bronze bushings, wet bolts and the heavier shackles. My question is which way would you guys go, Moryde or Dexter. At this time I am not even considering the more expensive equalizers or the shock kits. Just looking for some opinions on those two.

The trailer has about 8000 miles on it right now and I just finished doing the bearing repack. I have not taken the suspension apart to check to see how bad the original is but every thing I have read says it is only good for a couple of thousand miles. Thanks in advance for your help and all opinions are appreciated.

If you are SURE that there is no wear in the equalizers, then you don't need them.

    I'll second this.

You need to measure the bore on the equalizer, a set of calipers will work if you don't have inside mic's.

Especially the center pin on the equalizer. That pin gets more motion and thus in many cases wears more.

If the equalizer hole is worn and not true round, the new bronze bushings will crack over time. Those thin bronze bushings need 100% support by the bore to not crack. In my book, 0.003" oval wear is not good. 0.005" and above is just plain bad.

As far as quality, I have used both the Dexter and the Mor-Ryde. Both are very good products.

If your nylon bushings are worn through, which can very well happen in 8,000 miles on a heavy tow hauler, odds are high the equalizer bore is going to be affected.

If you do not have the tools to measure with in 3 place decimal inches, (or 2 place metric) then just buy the new Dexter kit with the equalizer. The bronze is then already inserted when you get it.

HEADS up! Make sure you align the grease fittings holes correctly before inserting the spring pins in the hanger. 9:00 & 3:00, no 6:00. If not, the grease will not go in. And check that the spring/equalizer pin heads do not rotate in the hanger. If the hanger is worn and will not bit into the pin serrations, you need to address this. Pins that spin are no good for long term.

    Hope this helps

  • I did the Dexter EX Flex with wet bolt kit on my 11k lb TT. One of the best upgrades I did! After the change you really don’t really feel any of the bumps or expansion joints in the road. I highly recommend it!
  • I did the Dexter upgrade on my 30 footer and it made a huge difference in stability. I would go with the heftiest one which ever it is though because its a big toy hauler. It will be worth the work invested.
