SUV or Crossover for towing behind a Class A

Hi, my husband and I purchased a 2009 Tiffin Allegro Bay Class A 6 weeks ago. Now we're faced with him needing a new (pre-owned) vehicle to drive back and forth to work and we'd like it to be what we tow as needed. Our challenges are: he's 6' 5 and needs plenty of head room and comfort a big plus. We have newfoundland dogs that are giant breeds. Would like to tow 4 wheels down. With all that said, trying to research makes and models and what years can and cannot be towed is proving challenging :) I'm hearing THIS is the place to come with these questions, ask the folks with the most experience! So, can you help me narrow down our search? What SUV's and/or Crossovers have plenty of comfort and headroom, can be towed 4 wheels down and can hold a couple giant breed dogs in the event of an emergency while traveling? Probably anything from a 2008-2012 would be best, not looking for brand new. Least amount of modification important to us as well. Thanks in advance for your suggestions! Deb

Wow, thank you so much for the great info! Any suggestions on vehicles? ..............
. I think you could handle as large a vehicle as a Chevy Traverse/GMC Acadia/Buick Enclave.
Plenty of room in the back for the puppies and I think it could handle 6'5" of hubby no problem. (I'm 6' and have plenty of room in my Acadia).
They can be towed 4-down after removing a couple of fuses.
  • Wow, thank you so much for the great info! Any suggestions on vehicles? I hav e a Ford van and we had an Explorer for years. I've been reading a lot of batteries going dead, transmission and engine issue , Ford changing what can and can't be towed and how. Maybe we need to stay away from Ford? Pre-owned, a few years old is the thought. Thanks again, really appreciate the help! Deb
  • We have a GMC Terrain (sister to the Chevy Equinox) and it's classified as a "mid-size" SUV. Personally, I think it's more on the "small-size" SUV/CUV. However, it does have pretty good room in it and the back seat not only lays down, it also will slide forward so it's up against the back of the front seats so there would be plenty of room for your fur kids. As for a 6-5 husband...I think he would have to try one out first.

In any case, all versions (AWD/FWD/4cyl/6cyl) are ALL 4-down tow able right out of the box. A fuse has to be pulled (I put in a switch to takes its place) and the ignition has to be turned to ACC. Put it in neutral and off I go. Suppose to start the engine every 300 miles, but since that's usually my limit for a days drive, I never start it otherwise.

I have 52,000 mile without a hiccup...I mean not one. I changed the oii/filter when it tells me to and rotate the tires about every 10K miles. Ours has all options including Nav, Bluetooth, Sirius, tow pkg, push button lift gate, etc.

On edit... I forgot to mention, it's about 4000 lbs and we normally get about 26mpg over all. There is a 65mph towing speed limit, but since I typically drive slower than that, I don't worry about it. I have had it over 70 going downhill a couple of times.

Should have included that its a FRED. Need to look at towing capacity again, I'm not certain. Thanks! Deb
OK, the specs I'm looking at give you a GCWR of 30,000#, a GVWR of 26,000# and a dry weight around 21,000#.
You have a MAXIMUM load capacity, including the toad, of 9000# and a tow rating of AT LEAST 4000#.
That tow rating, provided the hitch has enough rating, is increased by whatever you are short of the 26,000# GVWR. You could easily have 6000# tow rating available. That should get a you a large SUV or crossover quite comfortably.

  • First thing you need to figure out is how much weight you can tow. Some of the bigger SUVs and Crossovers push 4000 to 5000# (or more) and may be too much for your chassis.
