SUV Tow Vehicle

Hi! We have been towing with our Nissan Armada for years and it has been great! Looking at maybe getting a new vehicle. I was wondering if anyone tows with the new Armada style? It claims to still have a decent tow rating (8500) but I know it has become more of a crossover. Does anyone love a different make of SUV?

    GMC Yukon / Chevy Tahoe

or Yukon XL / Suburban for more cargo space (longer wheelbase)
  • Just FYI...the new Armada is not a crossover. It is a body on frame truck based on the globally loved. Nissan Patrol.

I would have no fear with the New Armada used wishing it’s ratings.

    Thanks!

If you satisfied with yours I don't see why a new one would not work. Still body on frame. The longer the wheelbase the better tow vehicle it is for stability. The only four new SUV'S I would consider would be the Expedition/Lincoln Suburban/Tahoe Sequoia or Armada because of having a body on frame design.
  • When I start looking to trade my Suburban the first vehicles I'll look at is GMC, then Chevy then Ford big SUVs. I like the long wheelbase Of the Suburban and Expedition EL.
  • As Jeremiah stats, the Patrol based Armada is very much truck-based, however they gave the US models extremely soft spring rates. I had one for 2 weeks for work and was happy to turn it back in. It reminded me of 90's Cadillacs, the way it floated in the freeway. I don't think it would be a good platform for towing.

The Expedition right now is the best overall towing package, and has more payload available than the Armada, but more important the 3.5L EcoBoost is just a nicer motor for towing, since it makes so much low-end torque. The Armada makes really good power, but only had high RPMs. It gets loud when you get on it.
  • I went and checked out the New Body Style Armada yesterday in light of this thread. I couldn’t even get to the test drive before I found issues.

Now, I like to look at USED vehicles of the same vintage to see how the age. There were panels loose on this two year old, 40k Armada. The seat headrest had plastic inserts where the little metal bars insert into the seat were pulling away from the fabric. It was not impressive. The whole truck just felt a bit ehh...

There was a Used 2015 LTZ Suburban with 89k miles on it and it was like brand new. No loose panels, no apparent issues and it was beautiful....that’s the one I would have bought.

    Thanks, and JMHO

  • One of the specs I appreciate most about my Expedition EL is the 34 gallon tank.
  • I feel like my 2012 Sequoia is doing great at towing our trailer. I wish it had a bit more cargo capacity, but it has handled quite well so far with our 247BHSWE.
