$200/day is also what we average to do a 2.5 week 5000 mile trip in our TC and formally our TH (still working and cannot take more time off). This includes events and eating out as well as fuel and groceries. The big difference is the capital sunk into our rig and the maintenance verses using a car. Although we have to cover more ground in less time due to work commitments, this scales closely to Less Stuff's trip. We take off for many 2-night 1-tank trips and typically spend less than $75/day.
On many of our trips, we bring toys along for hobby, amusement or alternative transportation. This would not be possible without a larger travel budget due to the additional vehicle operating costs if we stayed in lodging instead of bringing our own. There are places we like to visit that are not camping friendly, but we have the option to either go sans the camper or camp on the peripheral and visit the sights with one of our nimbler vehicles we bring along. Our last city trip put us in White Rock for camping and Vancouver by motorcycle. For us, having more choices and options allows us more opportunities.
