Sway Control really needed ???

On a 21 foot lite trailer do you think sway is going to be a concern?? On a bigger trailer I know it is necessary but a lightweight 21 footer. Maybe a friction bar but I cannot see that stopping any significant wiggling. The back leverage is enormous for that to do anything ?? Comments

Actually, there are folks here who swear by friction bars, properly set up. The leverage is not that much different than any of the other sway control WDH, like Equal-I-Zer.
  • What’s lightweight? And what’s your TV? I think both may have a bearing on it. I pull a 16’ 3000# loaded TT with an F150 and don’t need either WD or sway control; it’s solid as a rock. I used to pull it with a shorter wheelbase full size Bronco and I’d occasionally get a little minor sway that I immediately tweaked out with the manual control. My gut feeling is sway might be a good idea with a 21’er. If it were mine I’d probably drive it for awhile and see if how it handled.
  • 90% of the time, you'll need no sway control. Worry yourself about the 10% of the time you will need it!

  • I pulled a 21' TT and noticed a huge difference with and without sway control. First hitch was standard WDH. Pulled fine most of the time but on windy days had bad sway when semi's passed. Scrapped that hitch and bought an Equalizer hitch. World of difference.
  • Depends upon the TV and your own personal preferences.
The bigger (heavier/longer) the truck, the less need for sway control.
The lighter/shorter the trailer, the less need for sway control.

I don't use sway control or WDH with my 24' trailer, but know another guy with a similar truck and identical trailer who won't drive it without sway control. Guess I'm just used to the little nudges I get from the passing trucks.
  • What type of trailer...is it a pop-up, hybrid or regular trailer? Is it 21' overall, or is just the camper box 21' long. I think your answers will vary with the answer to these questions.

The largest unit I ever pulled without any sway control was a Starcraft Starstream that had a 12 foot box....so around 15-16 foot overall length. I never had any sway, so I never even thought about sway control, and when I bought it, the RV dealer never said anything about sway control.

With a 21 foot pull behind trailer (full heighth), I really don't know what is typically recommended, but some form of sway control would be "cheap insurance" if you plan to tow it with a smaller, low profile vehicle. But...I really can't say I have an answer for you, but I'll be interested in hearing what others have to say!!
