Hmmm.... what type camper do you have ??
Some state require the first trailer to be a 5th wheel trailer...some do not when towing doubles.

Some states as mine require a 3/4 ton size truck to tow doubles....others do not.

Most states have length limits for double towing combo's..... one size don't fit all.

See your state commercial enforcement folks for answers to your questions.
  • coolbreeze01...read previous replies. We have determined that the op has a travel trailer and wants to pull another trailer behind it.

I too was confused about the "camper" part of the original post.

  • Wow.... ok. Must be an eastern dialect version. Sure had me stumped. You know now that I think about it, I'm pretty sure I have heard eastern folks refer to their travel trailer, pop-up, 5er and even motor home as a "camper". So, how do they distinguish between them?

ok, with that definition, I understand what he's referring to. I guess if I had read the replies I would have figured that out. Then again, maybe no...I'm pretty dense sometimes.

Can't speak for other states (I see you're from Illinois), but here in CA, to double tow (some people like to call it triple tow because there are three vehicles involved), the first trailer has to be a 5er and yes, a special (CDL) license must be obtained.

However, most travel trailers (campers to you) have frames that really don't provide sufficient strength to attach a hitch to and be able to have a heavy load connected to it. I suppose it is done, but probably the frame is beefed up enough to handle it.

Contact your DMV or a LEO and ask them.

Good luck, and sorry about my denseness...no disrespect intended.

  • I assumed (and we know what that can do) that since this is in the travel trailer forum that the camper was a travel trailer. And again I assumed he was speaking of a tag along (trailer) connected to another tag along (trailer).

Sorry, I'm confused. :h You said you have a "camper"....as in a camper that is on the back of your truck? And that you wanted to pull a trailer behind?:h

I don't see the problem here. I see many trucks with campers on the road also pulling a trailer of one type or another behind it.

And what does "tag to tag" mean?

I think I need another beer.

  • The table listed in the link above is a good place to start. But be careful in that the info may or may not be completely accurate or up to date. A check of the states DOT you are interested in would be advisable.

In the table above, triple tow means 3 vehicles, a tow vehicle and two trailers. It is often argued here that it is really double tow (and seems more correct), but in the RV world it is called triple tow. Quite a few states allow towing two trailers. But also be aware that there are a few that only allow towing two trailers if the first one is a 5th wheel trailer.
  • I beleive MD is the only state on the east coast that allows double/triple towing. Laws vary for the rest of the states, so do some research before crossing state lines.
