The actual rating for Onan propane generators which are by far the most common is in the 70s. 70db at half load at 10 ft according to this document. https://power.cummins.com/sites/default/files/literature/rv/F-1123-EN.pdf
In comparison, the maximum recommended rating for USNP is 60db at 50 ft. http://www.fs.fed.us/t-d/pubs/pdfimage/92231301.pdf Hard to say if our Onan's exceed 60 at 50 ft, but probably does depending on the direction. Sure, people use them in NP, but that's the "standard".
Higher end portables like Hondas are in the 50db range in comparison. If you understand decibels, that's a huge difference between the portables and our builtins.
