Man, I must be the exception. My 2012 AF1150 came with the onan 2.5kw onboard, and I love it. It starts with the push of a button from inside the coach, and seems to use very little propane. I spent the entire weekend out at my ranch in Nacogdoches Texas recently. Got there late friday afternoon, left late sunday evening. Ran the air conditioner non stop, day and night (it's 100 degrees and humid). I didn't even use up the 2 bottles that are standard. I figure it was less than 30 bucks propane for the whole weekend. Not bad.
Your not the exception, I LOVE mine too. :)
This forum is full of fiddle-phukers that like to over-think stuff ALOT!
The onboard genset is way more convenient then dealing with gasoline, anti-theft devices, cords, etc.
Plus, if you buy used, when you sell your camper, you will definitely get MORE money for it. Let the original buyer take the depreciation and you get the benefits.
Sorry but most of us aren't "fiddle-phukers" as you so inelegantly put it. Myself and probably most others came about our opinions through owning RVs with built-in gensets. I based my comment on owning two previous RVs with them. For the Class A and Class C that I owned the onboard made sense, despite the noise, as they pulled fuel from the RV's tank.
In a TC they have to run off of LP and for spending extended time camping that isn't a valid way to go as people have said they use more fuel per hour then a gas genset does and it's harder to refuel as well. If your plans don't include much longer then a weekend it can work I suppose. They also cost more and weigh more as well.
I think part of the issue is the OP was asking a question on LP Gen sets for a TC. Your opinion seems to be based off having had 2 gas units on a class A and Class C. No practical experience with a LP Gen Set in a TC. I think this was what the term was being used in reference to.
I have a 96 Caribou with a 2.5 Onan LP Gen set. TC carries 2 30 LB tanks. I can sit in the dinette with Genset running,AC on and hold a conversation with no issues.
Will run the frige for weeks. No Muss No Fuss and 40% less co2 than a gas genny.
