TC + Trailer Towing - do you have a rear camera?

Another question folks. For those of you pulling a trailer with your TC loaded do you have a backup camera?

What's a good brand/model?

  • Best place for backup camera equipment is tadibrothers.com. I chose to get a Garmin 760 GPS that doubles as a backup camera monitor with their BC-20 camera. Total cost for both was $470. The Garmin works well as a GPS for RV use and the backup camera is quite good.

If you backup and hit anyone or anything it is your fault regardless of any other mitigating circumstances. If a child goes behind the trailer and you hit them it is your fault 100% per the law. If a car pulls up into your blind spot and stops a few feet behind your RV or trailer, it is your fault and not theirs in terms of the law.

If you consider the cost in this light the backup camera is a wise investment. They are also becoming mandatory for all cars and trucks sold in the USA after May of 2018. It was supposed to be law by 2008 but the manufacturers whined as they did with ABS brakes and air bags and seat belts and every other automotive safety feature. They are capitalists and care only about profits and nothing about people.
  • Rear View Safety. Nice 7" color display. Wide angle view from camera. Infrared for good night viewing. Wireless works real good. Each camera is "paired" with the receiving display to prevent interference. I only have one camera and probably wouldn't need more than one but as above it can display all 4 at one time or you can scroll through each one at a time for the full 7" display.
  • I have a Kenwood 7100 Nav/Entertainment/Rear Camera System and I use the camera all the time. I have it wired so I can turn it on at one of my Outfitter switches and when I put the truck in reverse (naturally) I sometimes flat tow either of my Jeeps and I pull an enclosed trailer more times than not. I flip the outfitter switch on all the time when i have any of the above connected to my rig. Gives me piece of mind that i can see what is going on behind me.

My camera is mounted at the highest point at the rear of my coach. it has a wide angle lense and I can see my trailer hitch ball and the top of my trailer and full front. likewise if i am flat towing one of the Jeeps.
  • Check out the Rear View Safety camera from Costco:

Pretty high quality and has a multiplexer so you can add additional cameras (right and left can be controlled by turn signal)

I went all out though and got the Rearview 4 camera system. I am going to put one on the tip top of my overhang so I can see branches and other obstructions before I go under them (we are at 12 feet high).
  • I don't need a camera for my enclosed trailer because I can see it in my mirrors. My flatbed is small and I can only see it when making a turn. I have become used to this setup and don't have a need for a camera at this point.

If I got a camera, I would most likely mount it on the back of the trailer because that is where my blind spot is.
  • Nope...wish we did but we try to keep an eye on the fenders of trailer. We stop often and always check hubs. We also have not heard positive results about wireless cameras. Check sig for rig...love the TC life after having every rv imaginable!
