- dadwolf2ExplorerIMO, you need a backup camera more if you don't tow than if you do tow all the time. Generally speaking it's that area right behind the camper to about 20+ feet that you need to see where people or things can be that you can't see without a camera. If you tow a trailer, nothing sneaks into that spot and the area behind the trailer is visible with your mirrors.
I have a Rear View Safety camera system mounted right about the rear door. Rear View Safety also has the capability to utilize multiple cameras and even a remotely plugged in camera on the trailer to the truck. - crcrExplorerI use the Edge CTS Monitor, which plugs in the OBD2 outlet under the dash. It provides all the data off the vehicle computer in several configurations and any combination of gauges. I found the best price for the Edge from AutoAnything.
Plus, to get to answering your question, it has a video plug for a backup camera. Edge sells their own camera for big bucks, but any rear view camera will work. I bought this one on Amazon for $15 shipped, attached it to my license plate frame and routed the wire up front to the monitor, and it works extremely well.
I'm very happy with this setup. I hooked mine to the backup lights, and the gauges view switches to the rear view camera when I put the truck in reverse, just like a factory backup camera. However, I believe that one could wire it so that it could be turned on with a switch if you want to monitor behind you when driving. - wing464ExplorerSure do have one... I found that other drivers tend to follow too closely and I cannot see them in my rear view mirrors. My Lance was pre-wired for a Voyager camera and I took advantage of it and installed the camera my self.. It has saved me from mishaps so many times that I feel I cannot trust not having one.. I use it to monitor what is tailgating me; determine what is behind me before backing, use it extensively to back my boat into the water and into garage when I return home.... The big plus for me was the elimination of a blind spot that blocked my field of view... Yep I would immediately replace mine if it malfunctions and would immediately install one on a new TC if I felt I need another TC....
- pjay9ExplorerThis is great information. Thank you.
- DoneItAllExplorerMy Lance was pre-wired for a rear camera but not installed. I purchased a Voyager from RVCams.com and wouldn't be without it. I only tow a kayak trailer but I can't see it at all without the camera. Drove me crazy until I installed it.
John - I have the Chevrolet OEM camera which displays the image on the OEM Audio/Nav screen, this is on my 2009.
On my 2006 I have the Edge Insight CTS and their camera. The camera can display all the time or when the truck goes in to reverse.
The only reason I use either is to make hitching up to a trailer easier, since I travel solo. - Butch50ExplorerI have a Garmin 2798 7" GPS that comes with the BC20 camera (like the one above) It was right at $400 and that includes the camera. I have it mounted to the rear of my trailer. I just hooked it into my running light on the truck. I just turn on the parking or headlights and it fires up the camera. The BC20 is not a night vision camera but I have separate backup lights wired into the trailer that are mounted high so When I put the truck in reverse it is light up like day time behind me. So far the camera works great.
I going to get another camera and mount it on the camper. When I switch cameras all I have to do is pair it with GPS unit each time. - MORSNOWNavigator IIITo add to the OP's question; For those with wired cameras mounted up high on the rear of your camper, how did you run the wiring up to the cab (routing, secured to the camper, etc)?
