First off I would have to say that based on the size of your family you are NOT crazy for considering a TC especially if you are considering moving to a 1 ton truck with a slide! Now many said we were crazy with our family but we loved our TCing experience so much that we actually went back to a TC after having a 40ft 5th wheel. At the hight of our family/TC experiences, we had two adults, 4 kids (15, 11, 4, 2) and two dogs (Yorkie and Aussie)…and that was is a small short bed 3/4 ton truck with a Lance 861. Having a slide helps a lot, and the bunkbed option that Lance provides is very nice (the kids fight to sleep up there).
As for loading the TCer, I can load mine on the truck within 15 mins (if my tailgate and toolbox are already off). With quick connect devices provided by companies like Torklift securing the TC once on the truck is very quick.
Having a TC for quick getaways is great…as you can get around a lot easier and obviously into much tighter places. Due to this simple fact you'd be surprised how much more you'll use your TCer. Sometimes, if we plan to have back to back weekend trips, I'll just leave the TC on the truck for the week. This kids love taking it around the corner to the park and playing and then being able to hop in for a snack and bathroom break when they want.
The only thing I can't answer is about ski trips, but I know there are several TC owners that do often, and they have children as well. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me anytime.
