Know folks don't read all of the post, so first thanks for the replies. DW read the thread and it has her thinking enough to realize that at this point, our travel style doesn't work with slide units, or huge units for that matter. Later in life, after I retire, there could be a large multi-slide unit for us when we travel slower and spend more time at destinations.
Yes, for my style of travel, getting into the camper 10-15 times PER day when I travel is realistic. It is not unusual for my day to start before the sun comes up and doesn't end until well after the sun goes down. That is easily 14-16 hours without stopping at a store, or even seeing one if I'm lucky. Easily makes for 3 meals, a few bathroom breaks, few snacks breaks, several changes of gear, study maps, etc.
Even more important than the number of the stops is WHERE I stop. It could be in a crowded overlook, small parking lot, or small pull off where deploying a slide just isn't an option. Good example would be Cades Cove where there is hardly enough room to pull the truck off the side of the road much less stick a slide out 12". Worse yet, I often stop on the side of the road where the camper is leaning 10-15* sideways and could be another 20* front to back (I really need a compressor fridge). This side of the road parking prevents the slides from being used at all due to the angles.
Most folks think the east coast is crowded, paved, and urbanized. Come tag along with me and I'll show you the roads hardly traveled. Just make sure you have 4wd, full tank of fuel and aren't afraid of a few battle scars.
