Same principles as competitive cycling and tracks. They run or bike directly at the back of another to take advantage of the front runner's breaking the air-stream.
One exciting idea, actually available now on active cruise control, is for rigs to line up one after the other to reduce drag. I forgot the numbers for the tremendous fuel-energy saving this results.
And with Tesla's precision autonomous system, this would be something of a cinch for a fleet of Tesla rigs.
