The whole whitewash we have been hearing since at least the '60s to give your appliances the afternoon off is just propaganda from the local government or regulators. Utilities want growth and this is the ticket to save them.
Look at the growth since 1950.... Then growth somehow stops about year 2000.
Why must it now become static? Why can we not grow the grid as we did for 50 years straight. The grid has NEVER been ready for 10 years in the future and yet we got there time and again.
I bet these people have never been to California and seen that every new home being built has solar. That even elementary schools from remote town have solar roof for their parking. Or entire row of buildings with solar on top and on their parking garages. Wind mills beside energy hog industries. We have 3 on the cement manufacturer I consulted on and the electricity bill drop when the winds are blowing vigorously.
California has reduced cancer rates in clean air initiatives so that LA is a global demonstration of pollution control that LA's joke "that we don't trust air that we can't see" no longer applies.
Or, the successful private health care system and government cooperation to reduce heart-attack rates with preventive measures and behavioral modifications (reduced smoking or total ban it in the state).
That's California's can do attitude against the Mr Magoo's of this country. No wonder we can be the 6th larger economy if we secede, lol.
