Thanksgiving at Joshua Tree National Park

So we are going on our first major boondocking trip with our (New to us) 2007 Host Yukon. We picked Joshua Tree to try her out, during the Thanksgiving week,so we wonder which area or camp ground is the best or an area to be by ourselves, we will towing our jeep behind us to go exploring in. Just myself, wife and jeep,so excited!! Thanks
  • Ok, so we plan on leaving the 22 of November and staying till the 29th. Hopefully that's enough time to check in and if it's to crowded then we will try the other area, you guys had mentioned. Is all that area down there like JTNP? The BLM land between Orocopia Mts and Chuchwalla Mts what is that like? do they have any canyons or rocks that you can tuck away in?? Thanks again
  • If Joshua Tree is too crowded you might try Johnson Valley OHV area to the north off of HWY 247. You will be boondocking there. It's fun to watch the rock crawlers do their thing.

Jumbo Rocks is by far my favorite. You cannot boondock in Joshua Tree NP. You are only able to camp at the camprounds, which are all first come first serve. If you get there early you should be fine, but you will not be alone. If you want to boondock and not be near another person all weekend I would recommend you bypass JTNP all together and continue on the 10 to BLM land in between the Orocopia Mtns and chuckwalla mtns.

The rock climbers literally hand off all the campground spots to one another so they are essentially never free.

  • You won't be by your self. I like Jumbo Rocks CG best. Elevation is about 4000 feet. It may be cool.
  • Good luck. We did Thanksgiving last year there and every campground was jammed packed.
