The 2500 is no more?!?

Apparently I've been living under a rock. I'm just coming across the information that the 2500 Suburban has been discontinued. This puts us in a very difficult position We are blessed to have the 2006 with the 8.1L engine and the 4.1/1 gearing, and it only has 75,000 miles. However, it is already 8 years old, and we anticipate another 8-10 years of camping with our family of 5 and our dog.

We had every expectation of buying a new 2500 in 3-4 years, and that plan is now shot! Ugh!!

  • I put 178,000 miles on my Tahoe and it was still running well when I sold it. I had replaced the stock brake rotors and shocks and head gaskets and water pump and the tie rods and ball joints but this was too be expected and far cheaper than buying a new SUV for $60,000.

Most people are going to smaller and more fuel efficient SUV's and the trailer manufacturers are producing lighter weight models as a result. Not really the end of the world to have the Suburban 2500 go out of production. There is always the Ford Expedition if you want a huge SUV.
  • No, it is not a promising situation. I just bought my Suburban in the fall and plan to drive it 10 years. I like it better than the newer ones for towing anyway. I'm sure I could get by with an '08-'13, but I don't like the hitch or the seat comfort in the back. I've looked and looked, and no sign of a 2500 in the new models. I'm hoping to keep mine running till the kids are out of the house.
  • GM butchered it for 2007. It is gone for 2014. 2015 order guide shows no sign of an HD version.

Now there may be some hope. 2014 half ton pickups lost about 300 pounds keeping GVWR, so net payload is up. I half expect GM to do something similar for 2015 SUVs, but have not confirmed yet. And I have no idea if the receiver has the same problems as the 2007-2014 SUVs.

So: milk your 8.1L as long as you can!

Edit: Some quick research on the 2015. Lost 100 pounds. Curb weight of 4WD Yukon Denali is just under 6k pounds with 7500 pound GVWR. Tow rating max is 8000 pounds for 4WD. Does not look promising.
