Correctly set up with a quality WD hitch, sounds like a viable combination to me.
Don't let the payload/weight police get you down. Their answer to everything is "nope, won't work. You gotta go buy a bigger truck". Too many internet keyboard cowboys around, not enough practical real world users.
Go for it and enjoy your travels. Spend the extra money on travel rather than a bigger truck.
