All of my TV’s have averaged 9 to 9.5 MPG when towing a full height/width TT… trailer weight (between 7,000 and 10,000 pounds) seemed to make little difference, V6 or V8 made little difference, but the V10 got about 1 to 1.5MPG less towing but, a lot less when not towing…. My combined weight for extended trips runs close to 16,600 and my mileage changes very little from Lake Erie to south Florida… sometime worse on the level roads of Florida, but never a lot…
What seems like a good rule of thumb and ball park number to me is, the vehicles best fuel mileage will be halved with a TT on the back…
Jack,
Your V-10's were that bad? I thought all older gas engines did about the same (8-9?) when towing?
Before the present engine, my V-10 towed about 10 mpg at best with a tailwind. The best bobtail, no wind, about 14 mpg. Like you said, there are times it did 7 towing, exactly half that, against wind. Typical was about 8+ mpg towing with no wind, exactly 1 to 1.5 under your better engines, as you say.
It's unusual to have no wind here... 10 mph changes 60 mph into 70 or 50. The chronic wind corridor extends from Canada to Texas right through here. We're #2, Texas is #1. :(
