Hi, I'm new to the forum and like reading all the different opinions concerning slide-in campers. We have traveled via camper of some sort since 1975. We had 7 kids then but only three or four actually traveled with us. The kids slept in a tent unless the weather was too bad. In '77 we bought a Wolverine 11 1/2 ft camper. We had a '74 Chevy 3/4 ton 4X4. It had only been very lightly used once and was in perfect condition. We lived in it all one summer while building our present home. Later on in years we went to TTs but this year my husband and I are selling our 27ft TT and have bought an 8.5 ft used North Star slide-in on a GMC 2X2 truck with 8 ft body. We are getting it ready to go next week to celebrate our 49th anniversary. I know I will miss our roomy TT with many luxuries. But I've always been flexible and am looking forward to a new challenge. And it WILL be as I have a troublesome knee and the climb into the cabover bed isn't easy. I solved this problem by having a sleeping bag handy for the nights I might sleep in the dinette area.
Emotions are certainly much involved in camping homes. Whatever camper I'm staying in and wherever I am is my home. And I have been known to cry when one has to be sold. I've read here about wives who won't travel in a TC. I guess my husband is lucky! He is gung ho about returning to a smaller TC for reasons of economy, ease of driving and the ability to get back into the wilderness more. Right now he is figuring out how to put our kayaks on the back of the camper. When he gets that done I will write in about how he did it. I a have faith he will accomplish that..he is very resourceful. Jo
