I have the same 2017 Nirthern Lite as you are looking at on order for delivery next spring. Initially, I had also planned to get the Onan generator, but after talking to some others and reading some of the pros and cons people offered here, I decided against it. I already have a Honda eu2000i generator, and may get a second one, which seems like the better solution.
I hope you don't learn of another camper that is better than the Northern Lite, since, that would sure put a damper on my enthusiasm for getting it!
Oh, I already have my truck - a 2011 F350 dually. Mine is a 6.4L diesel, but I think you are right on about getting the gasser.
Yeah - did a ton of looking and couldn't find anything that seemed more practical/rugged but yet had a decent level of comfort/style on the interior - all while maintaining a simple truck/camper pairing. Slide + rugged off road don't seem to go together too well. Read about a lot of people having delam/rot issues and almost set the idea of RVing aside completely. The very last camper I came across was the NL because I started out looking at 5th wheels, then double slide/single slide TCs and got really wore out with all the potential pitfalls. Wanted the most simple and trouble free solution while maximizing amenities and dealer presence/repair in Oregon. Don't want to be stuck in a hotel room for a month or two. The decision to go with the gasser was the same. I REALLY liked the idea of a diesel engine - but my practical side convinced me not to burden myself with potential problems if I didn't need that much hauling power. If I'd gone with a fiver - would definitely have gone diesel. Read a lot of forums too and that's another reason why I'm sticking with gas - everyone said it wasn't necessary for a slideless, relatively light TC unless doing a ton of travelling.
If I find anything better in terms of a truck/camper pairing, I won't say anything. :-> Have avoided anything that goes off into pseudo class C land. Like the 'separation of church and state' concept of TCs rather the more semi-permanent bonding of truck with camper. Leveling issues came to mind. Want to be able to drop it off at the dealer and drive to a hotel room if things go south, too. Need a no-drama, easily handled, extremely rugged, trouble free, low profile setup that can handle any terrain short of rock climbing or navigating shallow rivers. Went with the dually because from what I've read - everyone says they handle TCs way better than SRWs unless you're super light. Will almost never be in snow so that potential dually/traction issue isn't really an issue for me.
Thanks for the reply!
