I put "resale value of the diesel" right up there with "exceeding GVWR is illegal" as the two top myths about RV towing and hauling.
You are NEVER going to get the $8000-$10000 price premium for the diesel back out of the truck at resale time. $8000 buys a LOT of gas. $8000 is $100 extra a month in an already ludicrous truck payment.
If you want it, fine. If you need it, fine. Just don't tell me to buy it as an "investment."
The fact of the matter is, good used heavy duty pickup trucks are highly desirable right now because there aren't that many of them around. Gas or diesel you are going to get a premium price for any truck with 8-lug wheels.
I'd say geographical locale has some bearing on the delta between gasser and diesel resale. Seems back in the upper Midwest, the delta is less for clean used trucks, but the cancer (rust) there puts more of a premium on "clean" as 10 year old trucks without rust are not as prominent.
All the western states I've been in, since the economy has been back, a lot of diesels, other than the known turd models, ARE close to $10k more on the used market. At least asking prices suggest that.
I believe your opinion has more to do with justifying your gasser or wanting a diesel though. Using rigs like mine as an example, they come and go on CL around here for $25-30k plus everyday, depending on how many mods/addons.
I see the same gassers advertised for $13-20k.
Same can be said for newer used GMs. Take the lmm and lml trucks. Low to high 30s unless it's beat or ton of miles. Same truck with a 6.0 is low to high 20s.
I do agree though, none of them are an "investment" although some can be of lesser expense than others.
