I would opine that it's more a matter of time and effort vs money spent. The most reliable TT's are the ones the owner is willing to spend the time on to care for maintain.
I have known people who could literally destroy top end products in short order through misuse and lack of maint.
As for old Airstreams being on the road, I suspect that is largely due to the fact there are some very dedicated and talented folks who have lavished a LOT of effort in keeping them on, or putting them back on the road. Sort of like old motorcycles or cars, the more a labor of love these things become, the nicer they are.
