The Perfect Pickup to Tow With and Be Towed ?

I am considering replacing my old Jeep liberty with a Pickup which can be towed now and which later can tow a small camper when I sell my coach. I sure would appreciate any advice on what pickup can fit both jobs. Thanks.
  • Bedlam: Thanks for the response. I have a 10,000 lb tow bar but would prefer to tow less than 5000 lbs.
  • F150 2.7L would be my choice. Good towing power, still lightweight. Midsize SUV fuel economy.
  • Whether you flat or trailer tow your toad will also make a difference. Some vehicles require expensive modification to flat tow or are not recommended at all which will reduce the field from which you can choose.

What is your MH towing capacity and what weight would you feel comfortable towing?
  • You might want to look at the GM lineup. Our truck is both a toad behind our DP and tows our trailers (7K to 10K) on a regular basis. Has a 2K payload and a manufacturers rated 10.5K tow limit.
  • We really liked the GMC Canyon new diesel. At 4500 lbs, it would be easier to tow now, but also tows up to 7,000 lbs for a small travel trailer - our Lance 1685 is 3800 lbs dry weight, 5000 loaded.

Having said that ... you may want to consider how long before you sell the motorhome. By buying something now that you can tow and then using it for a tow vehicle later, you're compromising both vehicles. If it's awhile before you're going to sell, you may want to get something specific to your current needs. Just our .02...
  • Can your MH safely handle 7000 pounds? Unless it can your just going to hate your decision.
