Don't just look at the floor plan and bling - you should get under TTs and check out the frames, especially if looking at lighter ultra-lites. There are some good frames and some not good ones. Better = more weight though. Nash probably has one of the heaviest frames out there because they are heavy duty off-road frames, built in-house. Some of the Li**ert frames on ultra-lites are made from 3 pieces of sheet steel welded together and are more prone to problems, including some very serious ones. I'd stay away from these ones. They're easy to spot by just running a finger down the I-beam where the weld is. Some makes are using a BAL Ultraframe which would be a good alternative. IIRC, the Jayco Whitehawk has one.
Sounds like you are starting to understand the significance and importance of payload ratings. Perhaps it's time to think about upgrading to a stronger TV. Even if you do manage to find something towable, if this is your first TT, there's a high probability that it won't be your last and you'll end up looking at something bigger and better and heavier. We're on our 3rd TT in 3 seasons, lol! Our original 20 footer ended up being just too small and cramped and lacking in some creature comforts like a sofa.
Other than the weight topic, it's not just the TT itself to consider. After what we've experienced, I would also investigate the "quality" of the dealer. Some dealers can be a real nightmare...
