Especially in these "somewhat limited" tow vehicles ( which in my experience is anything less than a 3/4 ton pickup ) I think NinerBikes advice is a good starting point.
Example, my Nissan Frontier is rated to tow 6200 pounds. My funfinder trailer was factory quoted as being 3040 pounds dry. It's actually just under 4000 on the CAT scale as I go camping.
It's a good match for the Nissan. But honestly, I would not want to go much more of a trailer with this truck.
