Good Point. I certainty can understand that, but who eventually pays for this reduced cost at the assembly line? The consumer in the way of increased repair expenses.
I would rather pay a little more, and have it right from the get go.
Yes, the exhaust systems have evolved. Today they are almost trouble free. In the "olden" days, the exhaust pipe and muffler section was the largest, physically and financially, section in an auto parts store. Today, it is minor or non existent.
But, then again, I am just an old gear head that stopped working on cars when they became computerized!
