"Yes, but 100k miles and 5 years later, the trade in value plus the fuel mileage will pay for most(if not all) the $10,495 so you are essentially adding power for free."
The last HD truck that I sold was 22 years old and only had 125,000 miles on it. I got $7K for it. I doubt that I would have gotten any more for a diesel. The diesel in 1991 was a $4k option and the S&P 500 went up by more than a factor of 4 during that 22 years. The 460 had virtually no repairs. So, I had at least $16K more in the bank when I sold the truck than I would have had if I had invested in the diesel. Plus, I had an extra 400lbs of payload the entire time and didn't have to listen to wife about the stench of diesel fuel when I bought gas.
My current truck is getting used a lot more, it is averaging just over 9,000 miles a year so it should still last 15 to 20 years unless I get the itch for new features. And in the head to head test that I ran against the 2019 diesel I liked my Ecoboost better for the driving that I do.
The main argument right now for a diesel is that they are rated to pull much more than even the new 7.3l gas engine. So, unless I start pulling more than 20,000lbs I will stay with a gas engine.
The main feature that Ford is promoting for the 7.3 is fuel economy. I am really looking forward to a showdown between all of the new the HD engines to see if it delivers the goods.
