Bottom line... goducks10 got tired of cleaning his EGR on his cummins and he complained about a lack of heat produced in the cab so he sold his low mileage truck for a new truck and paid more for the optional 6.4 gas engine that requires a special oil to prevent the cam from going flat to get as much performance as possible.
I truly hope his new truck lasts a lot longer so we don't have to hear about these type of stories!
Keep that oil changed on time their buddy! :B
1. It's there, not their. :B
2. I'm 100% seriously wanting to know about these cam issues. I no longer own my 6.4L and haven't been actively "following" the engine on forums etc. but I'm not aware of any issues with the engine. Do you have any links? Are they giving trouble? I only owned mine to about 35,000 miles if memory serves....
My cousin worked in the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram shop for several years and I heard from him there were some 6.4's that where having cam/lifter problems. Not sure it was the cam or the lifters but I believe they would install a short block when the failure happened. It's not a systemic problem.
The 5.7 and 6.4 suffer from the Cam/lifter issue. But the failures are few and far between. So much so that it really isn't much of an issue. I think the problem is from the too thin oil they spec'ed them to run. Before I bought my MH and after I sold my X I was looking at 5.7 and 6.4 2500 Ram Trucks. Came across a few but he 6.4 is hard to find in at least the term I was looking for.
And yes the 8speed will really wake up the 6.4 in the trucks!
My 2007 5.7L Hemi has 255,000 Km on it. That's 160,000ish miles. I don't think it was babied before I got it, but not abused either. The engine has the "hemi tick" but hasn't failed yet. It's 12 years old and has survived Canadian winters where oil is thick at -30 or -40.
