I have been using varieties of those for several years, and I think you are worrying too much about the alligator clips. Currently I have one of the silver ones with the on/off switch like the picture, but it is secured with push on clips on both sides of the top. I am also using a homemade one with an alligator clip, and there really is no different. The very first one I used only had an alligator clip, and I had an alligator clip on hand so that is what I used when I made my own, with fans from ebay. I have a total of four fans on my fins and have no frost build up on them now.
They work very well, no matter which kind you use. They make the fridge work so well there is almost no difference from our home fridge.
