Your story would almost be believable if you had requested to know if the vehicle being reported upon was primarily used a a daily driver or primarily used for towing/heavy loads. But you didn't. Hence your data can not support your "predetermined mindset".
Actually we can. The ECM on many modern diesel record such stats as idle time, average load, and so on(LINK for more stats). We collect these stats on our own fleets and some info like idle hours for our customer's trucks that go through our medium duty service departments. You can also tell how the vehicle is used based on its spec and application. If it is a refuge truck then you know it will do a lot of stop and go driving, if it is utilities powerline bucket truck then you know it has a lot of idle hours, and so on.
Another way we can tell is that my company is the largest medium and heavy duty dealership group providing real time telematics solutions for our customers(LINK for GEOTAB) that gives you the ability to monitor your whole fleet in real time at your computer. You can also view each individual truck or your fleets as a whole through a dashboard telling you which trucks are more prone to failure versus another and how each truck is used.
We also have many customers that have us monitor these trucks for them and taking care of their maintenance needs as they arise through our RushCare center(Link to RushCare). We collect this data not only for our own fleet, but also for our customers we can help them make better decisions one what vehicles setups are best for certain applications based on real data, not just assumptions based on emotions. So yes, we can tell how many of these trucks are being used.
Is that enough info for you or do you need more?
