I'd have to see the data. Are you at least comparing HD trucks to HD trucks? I'd have a hard time believing diesels are more reliable than gas for the first 100k miles, regardless of use.
I've seen too many blowing white smoke or getting a piggyback ride.
That is comparing half ton parts trucks, HD pickups, cab & chassis models, F650/750, and Isuzu & Fuso gas/diesel box trucks.
The gas trucks main issues seem to be lifters, timing chains, cooling system, and oil consumption with a few O2 sensors in the mix while diesels seem to be NOx sensors, water pump(Cummins only), glow plugs(PSD & Dmax only), DEF pump/heaters(PSD and Dmax only), and of course CP4 (PSD and DMax only).
Most of the old EGR cooler and EGR valve white smoke issues that you are referring to have seem to fixed on the DEF trucks unless the truck idles for long periods or makes a lot of short trips with low load. I know Cummins added a larger EGR cooler along with some other modifications on the 2010+ trucks to help combat this issue and I am sure the others did as well, but not 100% certain.
Also, some issues that certain brands have may not carry over to another brand because they don't have the same parts. For example, the Cummins engine does not have glow plugs, an electronic DEF heater, or use a CP4 pump so you can't apply those issues to the Cummins. On the flip side, the water pump issues seem to be mainly with the Cummins which seem to be fixed with the recalled pump with the better bearing.
