Well, while I was fond of Cummins thru the beginning of this century, starting with the ISX in 2001, Cummins has had more than water pump defect issues. The Cummins ISX for several years had serious cam issues. And when it would cost $10K to do cams on a motor, that can turn someone off pretty quickly. I even saw the TSB from Cummins that they had gotten a bunch of cams that had metallurgy issues. I just happened to participate in two motors that were affected. I turned me from positive towards Cummins to where I will buy nothing with a Cummins in it. Cummins' suppliers have some serious quality control issues they need to get on top of.
That can happen to any thing man made...bad batches...good luck!
Correct. Having worked in the medium/heavy duty trucking industry for decades, I have seen supplier issues with every engine make from Cat to Cummins and Detroit to Mercedes at one point in time. Especially since most use the same suppliers. Even the gas engines like the 8.8L found in the IC Bus or 6.8L V10 in the Blue Bird and Super duty trucks had supplier issues at one point in time. It happens. Saying that the current X15 is not reliable because of a cam issue over 15 years ago sounds just as silly as me saying current Fords are not reliable because of the Pinto back in the 70's.
