These unreliable new diesel engines!

Litch, that’s always frustrating.
If it makes you feel better, the other mfgs aren’t immune to random issues and incompetent service departments.
I’ve owned or driven (exclusively, work trucks assigned to me) around 30-40 new or newish pickups of all 3 brands since the mid 90s. Know what? Most of them have been basically perfect and 1 Dodge, 2 Fords and 0 GMs have been problem vehicles.
Luck o the draw man. The new L5P Dmaxes aren’t any more problem prone than the others.

2012 RAM CDI 3500 - 256,000+ miles.... a few repairs, power steering pump, a few more things along with recalls, normal maintenance and tires... It's been a good truck / engine, hopefully will get me another 150,000 miles... LOL

I had that problem with a car (Grand Prix) once it just needed a new outside temp sensor, also when it would show the false cold temp the AC would not work right.

There was some logic to cut the AC out at a certain low outside temp.

Find a new dealer/shop.

That was a real troubling time for the new 6.7 even tho it had NOTHING to do with the engine and everything to do with trying to comply with emissions.

My 2007.5 ram was the first year for the 6.7L and new DPF emission system. The first 2 years it was in the shop more than on the road. Replaced the turbo 3 times due to soot buildup. Lots of EGR and heater grid cleanings, O2 sensor replacements etc.

Dodge gave me a 100,000 mile $0 deductible bumper to bumper warranty. Seems after 2 years and lots of parts replaced and new firmware the problems went away. Now 11 years old and 110,000 miles 90% towing and its been trouble free. So 9 years of no issues.

Multiple check engine emission related issues under warranty. Turbo cleaned at 20,000. Turbo replaced at 25,000. Exhaust sensors replaced 28,000. CP3 pump replaced 45,000. Warranty ends.

Lucky you. I had a 2009 6.7 manual that had a CEL illuminate at 600 miles... for a recall that they were waiting for the software package to come in the mail (I took delivery in Germany when I was stationed there, the tiny Dodge dealer in a nearby town was not properly equipped for the vehicle). That recall flash, another recall flash, and a steering recall were all the problems I saw, and I sold it with 91,000 miles.

I still run into the new owner every now and then. He said at 125,000 miles the DPF plugged. Rather than pay an insane amount for a new one, he had a friend delete it. He admitted that his wife daily drove the truck short distances a lot, the likely cause of the failure. I drove it about 0% unladen and 70% towing, ranging from 5,000 to 17,000 hanging off the back. He mainly pulled hay trailers with it.

I'm guessing you did a lot of in-town, unladen errands in yours...

2014 6.7 Cummins...totally disabled and required a road service call. The culprit: a bad fuse in the DEF sysem! Ye gods, I hate emission diesels!

You guys have me kind of paranoid... I recently purchased a '12 GMC 2500HD SLT crew cab diesel with 75k miles on it from a local farmer, truck is in really nice condition, average lifetime speed is 39mph according to the hour meter, and I got a decent deal on it. It drives great, never needed any work, fully loaded. Only thing I'm scared of is the CP4 failure issue but I think this truck has been run on B20 its whole life since that's pretty much all you can get in our county.

I guess I'll just keep an emergency fund and trade it in if it gets expensive. It's so much of an upgrade over a half ton/5.3L/4L60E towing experience. Only thing I was scared of was an in tank fuel pump failure on that but I proactively changed it before it went out and it wasn't expensive to fix.

I feel comfortable doing just about any DIY work, but if I need a full fuel system replacement I just don't have the time to do that myself because it's such a pain in the neck. If it just needed fuel injectors or a turbo or something I would DIY that as long as it wasn't on the side of a road. My truck is still under urea tank and glow plug extended warranties.

The funny thing is, I couldn't find much bad about the '12 Duramaxes until after I bought it. Oh well, I love the truck. Prices for both new and used diesel trucks in my area are really high, so I would think if long term reliability was so bad they would drop like a stone.
