Most use resistance between contact points installed in the sidewall of the tank. There are other systems. The resistance systems are usually the cheapest and least reliable and, unfortunately, what most manufacturers install.
If you could simply install a second tank you would only need to "T" the two tanks together. As long as the tanks were the same height and the bottoms on the same horizontal plane all the gauges and fill connections of the original tank would work on both tanks.
